One Day at a Time
Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.
~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today’s post is the second in a series of six written by my friend Bethany (a pseudonym). Several months ago, Bethany told her story, which is one filled with incidents of childhood abuse. (Note: To read these posts, go to www.suereeve.com, and check archived posts, April 11-April 28, 2016, “The Little Girl Inside Our Story.”) In today’s post, Bethany continues to share steps she has taken in her journey toward becoming the woman God designed her to be.
Take it one day at a time—one step at a time!
I’m a worrier, I worry about how much I worry. If I quit worrying for a minute, I worry about when I will start worrying again!
I have had to learn to take life one day at a time.
I used to say, I’m such a mess.
Where do I even start?
How can I get help when I don’t even know how I feel?’
I’m learning change occurs one day at a time, making small changes that seem insignificant at the time. It can be so hard to see change happening in the day to day. I have had to learn to trust God is doing something. One of the prayers I pray most is, God, help me! I don’t know what the next right step for me is, but I trust God does.
Even writing this blog is a step of faith. I feel totally inadequate to take such steps. I have had thoughts like: What do you think you have to say that could ever help anyone? You’re just a fraud. But, Sue asked to write these follow-up guest blog posts, and I am going to take the step even though I feel incompetent.
Some days I see good progress. Some days I feel like I’m stumbling around in the dark. I worry what I think is God’s voice may really be just my own thoughts. I’ve prayed for God to show me the difference between my own thoughts and His voice. Psalm 37:4 says ‘Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desire.’
If you relate to what I’m saying, if you don’t know where to start, I encourage you to ask God to show you. If your heart’s desire is like mine—if you want to be free to live the life God created you to live, I believe God will honor that! We might not know what steps to take but God will show us.
So, let’s be brave and take those steps—one day at a time—one step at a time!
I love you, and I’m praying for you!
