Searching for the Best Path                                                                           Photo by Connie Lloyd

Last time, I introduced a prayer model based on Philippians 4:6 & 7 that has been helpful to me:

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (NIV)

I began using this model when dealing with stress and anxiety, but I’ve found it to be helpful in other areas as well.

Following are other examples of how I’ve prayed for wisdom, facing fearful situations and also when dealing with difficult people.

Scripture and Prayer

“I Need Direction, Lord!” – Praying for God’s Wisdom

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. (James 1:5 NLT)

My Prayer: O, Lord, you know I need wisdom to make right decisions. Please show me what I should do about:

My Prayer: Dear Lord, I don’t know what to do! Show me how to walk through this time. Give me a willing spirit to trust that you are leading me even when I don’t see hopeful signs. Please, guide me as I:

Don’t turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you…she will guard you. Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment. (Proverbs 4:6 & 7)

(Note: In the book of Proverbs, wisdom is personified in the feminine gender.)

Scripture and Prayer

Dealing with Difficult People

Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. (Colossians 3:12-15 NLT)

My Prayer: Lord, you know how difficult [_____________________] can be. Help me remember how much you forgave me. Please teach me how to put on your character, reminding me every day how to forgive and love more and more like you.

… let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up. (Hebrews 12:1-3 NLT)

My Prayer: Lord, I confess that I have allowed myself to become bogged down by the difficulty of my relationship with [__________________________]. The frustration and pain trips me up over and over. Remind me often that the best place for me to keep my eyes is on you, Jesus. Help me catch the vision of how I can respond to this hostility more like you did. I want to focus on:

Scripture and Prayer

“Lord, I am Afraid!” – Dealing with Fear

But when I am afraid, I will put my confidence in you. Yes, I will trust the promises of God. And since I am trusting him, what can mere man do to me? They are always twisting what I say. All their thoughts are how to harm me. They meet together to perfect their plans; they hide beside the trail, listening for my steps, waiting to kill me. They expect to get away with it. Don’t let them, Lord. In anger cast them to the ground. You have seen me tossing and turning through the night. You have collected all my tears and preserved them in your bottle! You have recorded every one in your book. (Psalm 56:3–8 TLB)

My Prayer: Lord, give me faith to trust what you say. You are my deliverer. You have seen my tears. In your time and in your way you will set me free. May everything that is happening to me result in your glory. Please calm these fears:

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. (2 Timothy 1:7 NIV)

My Prayer: Heavenly Father, At times I feel almost paralyzed by my fear of __________________________________________________________. Remind me often that the spirit of fear doesn’t come from You, God. Fill me with Your power, love and self-discipline. May I experience You in these three areas:

  2. _________________________________________________________________
  3. _________________________________________________________________

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10 NIV)

My Prayer: Lord God, open my eyes to see the help you extend to me. Show me where and how you are holding my hand. Help me understand your help in:

  1. ________________________________________________________________
  2. ________________________________________________________________
  3. ________________________________________________________________

If you find these helpful, you may want to use this prayer model to guide you in in your prayers about any number of situations. Laurice Engle and I have developed prayer sheets regarding a number of different topics, which we use in pastoral counseling at Lake City Church. If you’d like to see others, contact me in the Comment section.

Several great websites allow us to search topically and view Scriptures in many different Bible translations and paraphrases. (Note: I generally use www.biblegateway.com).

Blessings in your journey of searching for God’s best answers…

Sue
