Happy New Year!

Several weeks ago, I told you that instead of making New Year Resolutions, I choose a theme to guide me through the year. I began this practice almost 20 years ago when challenged by a man in the small group Ron and I attended to set a spiritual goal at the beginning of each new year.

My goal that year was a simple statement: “learn to be a better pray-er.” Those words changed the trajectory of my spiritual life and made me a believer in the power of choosing a single word or thought as the theme for each new year.

My theme for 2019 is: “learn to love better.”

For the past few days, I’ve been asking God this question: How can I exercise my free will to love in a way that aligns more and more with Your character?  I have a feeling this is a question God is anxious to answer.

A part of me doesn’t welcome the answer because I suspect I’m not always going to like what God reveals to me about my very flawed character.

But, another part of me—the part that really, truly wants to act more like Jesus, the part that’s courageous enough to rise to the challenge—is anxious to lean into the process of learning to love in a more Christlike way.

How about you? Do you have a theme to guide you through this new year? If so, please comment. I’d love to hear.

New Year blessings sent to you…
