Wrestling with My Desire & God’s Timing
I’d venture to say, we’ve all asked them. Questions like:
- How do I deal with prayers I believe are according to God’s will, prayers that are not unrealistic nor selfish, and still, they go unanswered?
- What do I do while waiting for my desire to converge with God’s timing?
Many times, I’ve asked a similar question, feeling angst and annoyance because I couldn’t figure out the answer. These days, I often pray simply, Surprise me, God!
Answers to our complicated spiritual questions come in different ways.
Here’s one I’ve experienced.
Because I love to read, I buy a LOT of books. And, because I’m unable to read them quickly enough, my bookcase contains several unread volumes!
More than once, even within the past few days, when I’ve been wrestling—mildly, moderately or massively—with a spiritual or life-direction conundrum, I’ve sauntered over to my bookcase, browsing absentmindedly, for something new to read.
Low and behold, the book I choose contains just the perfect dose of clarification, encouragement or wisdom needed to fuel faith and enable me to wait for God’s answer with hope, rather than despair.
Complicated spiritual questions can rock our confidence in God. While there are no one-size-fits-all definitive answers, scripture provides promises and principles that help. I’ve found some of the most practical answers for living out every day Christian faith are found in Romans, Chapter 12.
Romans 12:12 (taken today from The Message) offers three especially no-nonsense remedies. Rather than second-guessing our faith or questioning God’s mysterious timing, Paul suggests:
- Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame.
Continue to take good care of your soul:
- Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant.
Ways in which we can accomplish this are:
Learn about and cling to truths of God’s character and promises found throughout
Stay connected with and inspired by faith-filled believers.
- Pray all the harder.
Don’t stop asking for God’s blessing.
Persist in searching for God-honoring solutions (perhaps, even discovered in an
un-read volume on your bookshelf).
Keep on knock, knock, knocking on Heaven’s door. (See Matthew 7:7)
If you’re currently in a season of struggling with unanswered prayers, I’m asking God to ‘surprise’ you with a hint of hope and a glimpse of grace.
Blessings, my fellow faith sojourner…
