Happy New Year… Lessons from the Eagle

Each year about this time, throngs of Eagles swoop into the little resort hamlet my husband and I call home. They come to feed on spawning kokanee salmon in Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Along with the eagles, photographers from all over, including my hubby Ron, gather along the lakeshore, spending hours trying to catch magical photographs of these magnificent creatures.

In this first Listening on the Journey … post for 2022, I want to showcase a few of Ron’s recent eagle photos as well as some of my own thoughts as we prepare to step into the new year.

I feel a sense of anticipation about the upcoming year. A project I have planned for many years is coming together nicely, and I am committed to meeting an end of March deadline. If you’re inclined to pray for me, I would appreciate that so very much.

Since my retirement from full time work in 2010, I have wanted to become a part of a book club, and it has never worked out. I believe that’s about to change in 2022. Several friends from around the country—Virginia, Arkansas, Puerto Rico, and Florida—and I are planning to meet via Zoom and work our way slowly through a challenging and timely book, Live No Lies by John Mark Comer, which by the way, is a book I recommend.

Are you feeling kind of weary? If so, you’re not alone. The past couple years have taken a toll on people around the world. Isaiah uses imagery of the eagle to encourage us to keep on keeping on. Don’t lose hope in the Lord. Please join me and resolve to rely on the strength of God.

God reminded Moses that when the people of Israel had been slaves in Egypt, God carried them “on eagles’ wings” out of bondage.  (See Exodus 19:3-6)

Sometimes, we may feel as if we’re in bondage—to a difficult-to-control emotion; recurring negative or critical thoughts; a relationship that seems irreconcilable; a physical condition or habit.

What if God might be calling us in this new year to trust that He will carry us on eagles’ wings from bondage and into freedom?

Blessings and Happiness this New Year!
