Ancient Words are Powerful Reminders

Palouse Falls, Washington - January 2022

Have you ever felt as if you were about to “go under?” Me too!

     Several years ago, a friend sought me out to say that when he and his wife were praying for me, they felt the Lord led them to share a passage of Scripture. At the time, I thought it was rather strange, but throughout the years I have spent many hours meditating on a portion of Isaiah 43 they believed was pertinent for me. I am so grateful for people who are sensitive and willing to listen with their spirits and then with love and encouragement pass on the message.

     Today, I want to share the first few verses of this chapter. I realize these words were not written specifically to Sue Reeve nor to you. They were given to the prophet, Isaiah, by God for the nation of Israel at a particular point in their nation’s history.

Despite that fact, the wonderful thing about Holy Scripture is principles remain relevant to us today, which is what the writer of Hebrews probably meant when he said, For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12 NIV)

Here are those words from Isaiah:

Isaiah 43:1-3a NIV

But now, this is what the Lord says—
    he who created you, Jacob
[I personalize and substitute my childhood name, “Susie” here],
    he who formed you, Israel
[I substitute my adult name, “Sue”]:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
    I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
 When you pass through the waters,
    I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
    they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
    you will not be burned;
    the flames will not set you ablaze.

 For I am the Lord your God …

            If you are feeling anxious today about a personal problem or even about a global condition, I hope these ancient words from Isaiah will speak comfort to your soul.

Blessings on your journey,
