Considering the Days of our lives…

consideringthedays.jpg

It has been decades since I’ve watched a daytime soap opera. Still, this photo Ron took while we were on a sailboat cruise in St. Augustine, Florida, last December reminded me of Days of our Lives.

The long-running soap has been watched by generations since November 1965.  Each episode opens with the perfectly pitched, resonant voice of Macdonald Carey, once an actor in the series, reciting a sentence from a famous quote by the 4th Century Greek philosopher, Socrates. The full quote says:

Our lives are but specks of dust
falling through the fingers of time.

Like sands of an hourglass,
So are the days of our lives.

It’s true. Like sands of an hourglass, the days of our lives are moving ever so quickly. How, I muse, can I embrace, enjoy, and make use of every grain of that sand?

While writing this post, thinking about how to best wrap up my words, I received a Facebook message reporting an acquaintance, a lovely woman around my age will soon transition from earth to heaven. Brain cancer.

I feel shocked and sad.

With a heavy heart, after reading the report from the woman’s husband, I decided to conclude today’s Listening on the Journey… post with words from a prayer of Moses, which is recorded in Psalm 90. I hope you’ll join me in praying verse 12:

So [God] teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Blessings on each of your days…
